“Water Consciousness"
The 6th Annual Grand Isle Juried Exhibition - 2008
The Grand Isle Community Development Team, Inc. (GICDT) with support from the Grand Isle Port Commission and the Town of Grand Isle, invites artists to enter their works with themes relating to the nature, natural beauty and potential loss of the only inhabited Louisiana barrier island and the surrounding wetlands. The goal of the Exhibition is to raise awareness of Louisiana’s coastal erosion through an artist’s eye and to encourage the creation and preservation of images of this culture and its disappearing habitat for future generations.
Works selected will be on exhibit at the Grand Isle Community Center, Hwy. 1, Grand Isle, Louisiana April 12th - 20th. A reception and awards presentation will be held on April 20th, 2008.
$1000 for the work judged ‘Best of Show’ and three ‘Awards of Excellence’ of $500 each will be presented. All award recipients and contributors will be listed in the exhibition catalog.
Participation is open to artists with original artwork done within the last 5 years. The show is not judged by category. Entries will be accepted in these media:
1) Drawing / Painting / Printmaking
2) Photography
3) Video
4) Sculpture
5) Installation Art
6) Fiber Art
7) A separately judged Children’s Division (under 18) with individual & group projects.
Works must be exactly as they appear on the digital images submitted and they must not have won awards at other national or international shows. Accepted works must be available for the duration of the exhibition. Artists are encouraged to provide a written statement of 150 words or less about their work as it relates to the theme.
Entries in categories 1) & 2) must be framed, mounted or stretched and ready to hang. Works on paper and photography must be under Plexiglas. Mats, if used, should be white, or neutral. Framing deemed “unacceptable” by the juror will be disqualified. Category 3) The artist must furnish all equipment necessary to display DVD videos. Category 4) 3-dimensional work must be stable with any necessary pedestals supplied by the artist.
SIZE and WEIGHT LIMITATIONS
Maximum size is 9600 sq. inches / 60 pounds maximum - in any medium. Oversize works larger than the shipping limit (103" length and girth) require that the artist deliver on-site and assist in the installation. If entering an oversize piece, it is the artist’s responsibility to deliver the work to and to pick up from the Grand Isle Community Center. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED BY FEBRUARY 1, 2008.
A maximum of 3 original works, created in the last five years, may be entered. Submit 1 digital image per entry (2 images allowed for 3-dimensional work). Images must be .jpeg files submitted on compact discs which can be obtained when developing regular film.
Title each image with the artist’s last name and title of the work and if multiple entries indicate each file A / B / C to correspond with entry form submitted.
Video works must be in DVD format and cannot exceed 5 minutes. All Jpeg and DVD files on compact disks will be retained by the Art Committee and may be reproduced in the catalog, invitations or other promotional materials.
Artists of accepted work will be sent entry labels along with detailed shipping and hand-delivery instructions with deadline dates. Shipped work must be sent in sturdy, reusable packaging within dimensions acceptable to UPS (103” length & girth) or FedEx. Please do not pack with any type of peanuts. Enclose the return cost of mailing (by using ‘call tags’ or prepaid mailing labels) otherwise it will be returned COD. Any artwork that arrives damaged or does not meet the specific conditions stated may be disqualified. If hand-delivered a $10/day fine will be imposed on work picked-up after the scheduled date. Two weeks from that date it will become the property of GICDT.
SCHEDULE 2008
· Friday February 1st - Postmark deadline for entries.
· Wednesday February 27th - Notification of acceptance mailed to artists
· March 31st - Apr 4th - Shipped artwork must arrive
· March 31st – Apr 7th - Hand-delivered artwork must arrive by appointment
· April 7th - 9th - Installation
· Thursday April 10th - Judging for awards
· Saturday April 12th - Exhibition Opens
· Sunday April 20th - 2 - 4PM - Reception & Awards (last day of Exhibition: artwork may
be picked up after 4pm.)
· April 21st - 25th – Unpurchased shipped artwork will be returned
The Grand Isle Community Development Team Incorporated, a not for profit organization comprised of proactive citizens, seeks to improve the community through cultural, educational and environmental projects. GICDT will retain a 25% donation from all sales. Payment for sold work will be made within 30 days of the close of the Exhibition. Purchaser is responsible for pick-up of artwork or the shipping cost.
Submissions and artwork will be handled and installed with all possible care. GICDT and its volunteers are not responsible or liable for any loss or damage from any cause whatsoever. Insurance is the responsibility of the artist and entering the Exhibition shall constitute full understanding and agreement by the artist of all the conditions stated.
